History

The Boxer is a combat dog that dates back to 2500 B.C. It got its modern lineage since history has traced it back to Germany at the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century.

It is said that the breed was bred down from a larger, heavier German breed known as the Bullenbeisser ("bull biter").In medieval times, the Bullenbeisser was a big-game hunter for the nobility in Germany seeking prey such as bear, bison, and wild boar on huge ducal estates.

Political change took its toll in Germany in the early 1800s; the German nobility had fallen from favor, their estates broken up, and along with this ended the treasured tradition of grand boar hunts. The Bullenbeisser became jobless in 1865.By crossbreeding the age-old game hunter into a smaller mastiff-type breed imported from England, this ancient breed was given a new vigor.

By the late 1800s, the contemporary Boxer gets into the dreams of being a sleeker, more elegant dog.("Boxer" in English refers to the way in which this breed keeps its front paws raised while sparring, like a boxer when in the act of playing or defending oneself.)The Boxers played many roles over the years: an athlete, herd dog, police dog, war dog, watchdog, guard dog, and in some special instances, guide dog.
